If you've just been told you need to take the 3P exam before your clinical rotations or before graduation, you probably have a lot of questions — and you may have found that the answers are scattered, vague, or buried in your program handbook. This post answers every question we hear from students, clearly and honestly.
The 3P is a competency-based exam administered by APEA (Advanced Practice Education Associates) that tests clinical knowledge in the three core graduate NP courses: advanced pathophysiology, advanced pharmacotherapeutics, and advanced physical assessment. Exam questions cover content across each body system and the age continuum for all NP tracks.
This exam is administered after the core courses have been completed and is used as an assessment tool to determine clinical readiness. Exam results identify knowledge deficits and assist students in creating an appropriate study plan for improving before boards.
It is not a board certification exam. Passing it does not make you a certified NP. But many programs require you to pass it before you can sit for boards, before you can graduate, or both.
This varies by program. Some schools require it as a graduation requirement. Others use it as a formative assessment — meaning your score is informational, not a gate. A few programs require a minimum score before you can schedule your board exam.
Check your program handbook. If you're not sure whether your score counts toward graduation, email your program director directly and ask: "Is there a minimum passing score required, and what are the consequences of not meeting it?"
The 3P exam questions are equally distributed across the three testing domains:

Within those domains, questions are organized by Knowledge Area — the body systems tested include Cardiovascular, Dermatology, Endocrine, Eye/Ear/Nose/Throat, Gastroenterology, Hematology, Men's Health, Neurology, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Pregnancy, Psychiatry, Respiratory, STIs, Urology, and Women's Health.
