One of the most common questions new FNP graduates ask is: Should I take the AANP or the ANCC? Both are nationally recognized, both certify you as a Family Nurse Practitioner, and both are accepted by employers across the country. But they are different exams — and the right choice depends on your strengths.

The AANP (American Association of Nurse Practitioners)

• 150 questions (135 scored, 15 unscored pretest)
• 3 hours
• Heavily clinical — focused on assessment, diagnosis, and management
• Less emphasis on research, theory, and policy
• Pass rate: approximately 85–87%
• Best for: students who are strong clinically and prefer straightforward patient care questions

The ANCC (American Nurses Credentialing Center)

• 175 questions (150 scored, 25 unscored)
• 3.5 hours
• Mix of clinical AND professional practice questions (research, ethics, health policy, leadership)
• More theory-based content
• Pass rate: approximately 82–84%
• Best for: students who have a strong academic background and are comfortable with research and policy questions

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose AANP if:

• You are a strong clinical thinker
• You prefer straightforward "what do you do next?" questions
• You want a slightly shorter exam
• You don't want to study health policy and nursing theory

Choose ANCC if:

• Your program emphasized research and evidence-based practice
• You want the ANCC credential specifically (some academic or VA positions prefer it)
• You are comfortable with a longer, more varied exam

The Honest Truth

Most students who prepare well pass either exam. The content overlap is significant — pharmacology, pathophysiology, clinical management, and health promotion are tested on both. The difference is in the non-clinical content on the ANCC.
