"Which is easier — AANP or ANCC?"

It's the most common question in FNP board prep forums, and the answers are all over the place. Some people swear AANP is easier. Others say ANCC. A few say they're about the same.

Here's what the evidence actually shows.

The Pass Rate Data

AANP consistently reports a first-time pass rate of around 85–87%. ANCC's first-time pass rate is typically in the 82–84% range. The difference is real but small.

This doesn't necessarily mean AANP is "easier" — it may reflect differences in who takes each exam, how programs prepare students, or other factors. But the data does suggest a slight advantage for AANP in terms of first-attempt success.

What's Actually Different Between the Two Exams

AANP (American Association of Nurse Practitioners):

• 150 questions (125 scored, 25 unscored pilot questions)
• 3 hours
• More clinically focused — emphasizes patient management and treatment decisions
• Less emphasis on research and theory
• Generally considered more "nursing school-like" in question style

ANCC (American Nurses Credentialing Center):

• 150 questions (135 scored, 15 unscored)
• 3.5 hours (more time per question)

How to Choose

Choose AANP if:

• You're a strong clinical thinker who prefers patient management questions

Choose ANCC if:

• You're strong in research, evidence-based practice, and professional role content

The Honest Answer

Neither exam is dramatically easier than the other. The best exam for you is the one that plays to your strengths. If you're a strong clinical thinker, AANP may feel more natural. If you're comfortable with research and policy content, ANCC may suit you better.
