Board certification is not a one-time achievement. Both the AANP and ANCC certifications require ongoing maintenance — a combination of continuing education, clinical practice hours, and periodic recertification — to remain active. Understanding these requirements from the beginning of your career allows you to plan your continuing education strategically.
AANP certification must be renewed every five years. The renewal requirements include: 1,000 hours of clinical practice as an FNP during the five-year period, 100 hours of continuing education (including 25 hours of pharmacology), and payment of the renewal fee.
The AANP also offers a recertification exam option for those who prefer to demonstrate competency through examination rather than continuing education.
ANCC certification must also be renewed every five years. The renewal requirements include: 1,000 hours of clinical practice as an FNP, 75 continuing education hours (including 25 hours of pharmacology), and completion of one of several professional development activities (academic courses, presentations, publications, or precepting).
