FNP certification is not a one-time event. Both AANP and ANCC require certified NPs to recertify every five years — through continuing education credits, clinical practice hours, and in some cases, re-examination. The recertification process is a recurring touchpoint in every FNP's career, and it's one that most programs are not currently leveraging as an alumni engagement opportunity.
AANP recertification requires 100 continuing education hours over five years, including 25 hours of pharmacology. ANCC recertification requires 75 continuing education hours, including specific requirements for professional development and practice hours. Both pathways require documentation and formal application — a process that many NPs find confusing and stressful, particularly when they're managing full-time clinical practice.
Programs that provide clear, accessible information about recertification requirements — and that connect alumni with continuing education resources — are providing genuine value at a moment when alumni are actively looking for support. This is an opportunity to re-engage alumni who have drifted from the program community and to demonstrate that the program's investment in their success extends beyond graduation.
Alumni who feel supported through recertification are more likely to recommend the program to colleagues, return as preceptors, and contribute to alumni giving. The recertification touchpoint is a natural moment to re-engage alumni who may have lost connection with the program — and to remind them of the value the program provided during their initial certification journey.
Programs that have institutional partnerships with continuing education providers can extend those partnerships to alumni at discounted rates — a tangible benefit that reinforces the program's ongoing investment in graduate success.
