One of the most common questions from FNP students preparing for boards is: how many practice questions do I need to do? The question is understandable — practice questions are the most effective board prep tool, and students want to know how much is enough. But the honest answer is that the number of questions is less important than the quality of the questions and the quality of the learning that happens with each one.
That said, there is useful guidance on question volume — and on how to use practice questions most effectively.
The research on board exam preparation consistently finds that students who complete more practice questions perform better on their exams — up to a point. The relationship between question volume and exam performance is strong up to approximately 1,500 to 2,000 questions, and the marginal benefit of additional questions beyond that threshold diminishes. This suggests that 1,500 to 2,000 high-quality practice questions, completed with genuine engagement and reflection, is the target range for most candidates.

The most important variable in practice question effectiveness is not how many questions you do — it is how you do them. Students who rush through questions to maximize volume, who check the answer without reading the rationale, or who move on after getting a question wrong without understanding why, are getting far less value from their practice than students who engage deeply with each question.
The most effective approach is to treat each practice question as a learning opportunity, not just a test. Read the question carefully. Reason through the answer before looking at it. Read the full rationale, including the explanations for the wrong answers. And if you got the question wrong, understand specifically why — what reasoning error you made, what knowledge gap it revealed — before moving on.
