Questions to Ask in Your FNP Job Interview

Passed — Now What? · 5 min read · April 17, 2026

Most FNP job interview guides focus on how to answer the employer's questions. This guide focuses on the questions you should ask — because the questions you ask in an interview reveal as much about your professionalism and your priorities as the answers you give. And because the answers to these questions will tell you more about whether this is the right position for you than anything in the job posting.

Questions About the Practice and the Role

The most important questions to ask are about the specific realities of the role: What is the expected patient volume per session? What is the average appointment length? What is the support staff structure — how many MAs, nurses, or front desk staff will I be working with? What EHR system does the practice use, and what is the training process for new providers?

These questions demonstrate that you understand the practical realities of clinical practice and that you are thinking seriously about whether this position will allow you to practice effectively.

"The questions you ask in an interview are your opportunity to evaluate the employer as much as they are evaluating you. Use them."

Questions About Onboarding and Support

For new FNP graduates, questions about onboarding and support are particularly important: What does the onboarding process look like for new providers? Is there a structured orientation period? Will I have access to a physician or experienced NP for clinical questions during my first months? What resources are available for continuing education?

Questions About Culture and Retention

The question "why is this position open?" is one of the most revealing you can ask. A practice that has had multiple NPs in the same role in a short period is a significant red flag. Equally revealing: "How long have your current NPs been with the practice?" A practice with long-tenured NPs is a practice where NPs are satisfied.
