One of the most common debates in FNP board prep communities is about format: should you use a video course, a review book, or a QBANK? Students argue passionately for their preferred format, and the debate generates more heat than light. The honest answer is that the best board preparation uses all three — in the right sequence, for the right purposes.
Each format has specific strengths and specific limitations, and understanding those strengths and limitations helps you use each one most effectively.
The review book is the foundation layer of board preparation. It provides systematic, comprehensive coverage of the clinical content that boards test — organized by system, with the key concepts, guidelines, and clinical pearls that you need to know. It is most valuable as a first pass through the content: read it once, thoroughly, early in the board prep process, to build the foundational knowledge that everything else builds on.
The limitation of the review book is that it is passive. Reading is the least effective study method for building the kind of integrated clinical reasoning that boards test. The review book tells you what to know; it does not test whether you know it.
The video course is the explanation layer — the resource that brings the content to life and explains the "why" behind clinical decisions. The best video courses are taught by experienced clinicians who can explain complex concepts clearly, connect clinical content to real patient scenarios, and highlight the high-yield information that boards test most frequently.
The limitation of the video course is similar to the review book: it is primarily passive. Watching a video is more engaging than reading, but it does not test your understanding, and the sense of comprehension you feel while watching does not always translate into the ability to apply the knowledge under exam conditions.
The QBANK is the active learning engine of board preparation — the resource that tests your understanding, identifies your gaps, and builds the clinical reasoning skills that boards require.
